Montreal Events Calendar: What’s On Month by Month

Montreal events month by month from October 2026 to September 2027: festival dates organisers have published, hockey, ballet, fireworks, public holidays and the free events worth planning around.

Montreal events run all year, not just through the summer festival rush. Between a hockey season that starts in October, a Christmas market in November, Igloofest in the January cold, fireworks over the river in summer and a Formula 1 weekend that now falls in May, there is something worth planning around in every month. This calendar goes month by month from mid-October 2026 to September 2027, with the dates organisers have published for their next edition, the 2026 dates where the new ones are still to come, and the public holidays that change opening hours.

Festivals get their own deep dive in our guide to Montreal festivals. This page is broader: sport, ballet, holidays, recurring nights out and the smaller dates that shape a trip. All dates below were checked against the organisers’ own sites in October 2026.

Montreal Events Calendar at a Glance

The table lists the main dated events for each month. Where an organiser has published its next edition, the date is given; where it has not, the 2026 dates are shown as a guide, marked “2026 edition”, and you should check the organiser’s site before booking.

Montreal Events Month by Month, October 2026 to September 2027

Montreal’s year has a rhythm. Autumn is for film and the start of the hockey season, winter for outdoor festivals in snowsuits, spring is the quiet build-up, and from late May to August something big happens almost every week. Here is what to expect in each month.

Late October 2026

Two seasonal evenings carry the city to the end of the month. Gardens of Light, the lantern festival at the Botanical Garden, runs until Sunday 1 November; timed tickets include daytime entry to the garden on the same day, so it is worth arriving in the afternoon. At La Ronde, the amusement park on Île Sainte-Hélène, Fright Fest runs until 1 November on weekends, plus Fridays 23 and 30 October, with haunted attractions and Halloween theming.

Piknic Électronik, the open-air electronic music Sundays at Parc Jean-Drapeau, wraps up its 2026 season on 18 October. The Canadiens’ regular season is under way at the Bell Centre, and Halloween itself brings costume parties to the bars of the Plateau and the Village. Clocks go back one hour on Sunday 1 November.

November 2026

November is film, books and the first of the Christmas markets. CINEMANIA, the festival of French-language film, runs from 4 to 15 November. Coup de cœur francophone, a festival of French-language music in its 40th edition, runs from 5 to 15 November. The documentary festival RIDM follows from 19 to 29 November, and the Salon du livre de Montréal, the city’s big French-language book fair, fills the Palais des congrès from 25 to 29 November.

The Grand Marché de Noël, downtown’s Christmas market, opens on 13 November in the Quartier des spectacles, and the smaller Christmas Village at Atwater Market opens on 26 November. Downtown’s Santa Claus Parade went down boulevard René-Lévesque on Saturday 22 November 2025; check the parade’s own channels for the 2026 date. Football fans should note that the 113th Grey Cup, the CFL’s championship game, is in Calgary on Sunday 15 November 2026, not in Montreal. The full month is covered in Montreal in November.

December 2026

December is a very festive month in Montreal and one of its busiest. Les Grands Ballets Canadiens perform The Nutcracker (Casse-Noisette) from 5 to 30 December, a city tradition for families. Montreal Comiccon runs a two-day holiday edition on 5 and 6 December. The downtown Christmas market opens daily from 16 December and stays open on Christmas Day, while the Atwater Christmas Village runs until 24 December.

The Canadiens play at home over the holidays, against Toronto on 26 December, Dallas on 27 December and Columbus on 29 December; expect the Boxing Day game against the Maple Leafs to be the toughest ticket of the month. New Year’s Eve brings parties across the city, and the Old Port held a free outdoor countdown, Le Grand Minuit, on 31 December 2025; check the Old Port’s site for the 2026 programme. Our guides to Christmas in Montreal, the Christmas market and New Year’s Eve go into each in detail.

January 2027

January is the coldest month and the one that tests whether you like winter. Igloofest, the outdoor electronic music festival in the Old Port, runs from 14 January to 6 February 2027 according to its site; the snowsuit is the dress code and part of the fun. The festival’s own lineup page is the place to confirm show nights before you buy.

Parc Jean-Drapeau on Île Sainte-Hélène also programmes winter activities for families; check the park’s website for what is on in January 2027. Outdoor skating is at its best this month, from the refrigerated rink beside Beaver Lake on Mount Royal to rinks in neighbourhood parks; see the ice skating guide. The Canadiens host Chicago on 4 January.

February 2027

Igloofest finishes on 6 February, and the month’s big event comes at the end: Montréal en Lumière, from 18 to 28 February 2027. It mixes free outdoor light installations and rides in the Quartier des spectacles with food events in restaurants across the city. Its all-night arts crawl, Nuit blanche, keeps museums, galleries and performance spaces open into the small hours; check montrealenlumiere.com for the date of the night.

March 2027

March is the start of the sugar shack season (cabane à sucre), when maple producers outside the city serve big set meals and maple taffy on snow, roughly from March into early April. Book popular sugar shacks well ahead for weekends. The Montreal St. Patrick’s Day parade goes through downtown around 17 March; check the United Irish Societies of Montreal for the 2027 date and route.

Easter falls early in 2027: Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Monday 29 March. In Quebec, employers give one of the two as the statutory holiday, so expect some businesses to close on Friday and others on Monday. The Canadiens’ playoff race is on, and late-season home games get louder.

April 2027

April is the quietest month for big events, and a mixed bag for weather. Blue Metropolis, the Montreal international literary festival, holds its next edition from 15 to 18 April 2027. The Canadiens play their last regular-season home game on Thursday 1 April against the New York Rangers and finish the regular season in Ottawa on Saturday 10 April; any playoff games follow from mid-April. Spring is also when the terrasses (patios) begin to reappear on warm days.

May 2027

May is when the outdoor season restarts. The biggest date is the Canadian Grand Prix, which moved from June to late May in 2026 and runs from 21 to 23 May 2027 at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on Île Notre-Dame. Hotels fill and prices rise sharply that weekend, so book early or avoid it.

The Festival TransAmériques (FTA), the contemporary theatre and dance festival, opens on 26 May and runs to 10 June 2027. Monday 24 May is the Journée nationale des patriotes, a Quebec statutory holiday, which makes it a long weekend for locals. Piknic Électronik’s 2026 season at Parc Jean-Drapeau began on 17 May, so watch its site for the 2027 opening Sunday.

June 2027

June starts the summer run of festivals. The Francos de Montréal, a festival of French-language music with free outdoor stages in the Quartier des spectacles, runs from 11 to 19 June 2027. The MURAL street art festival takes over boulevard Saint-Laurent in June (its 2026 edition ran from 4 to 14 June). Thursday 24 June is the Fête nationale du Québec, Quebec’s national holiday, with neighbourhood parties, concerts and blue-and-white flags everywhere.

Then comes the big one: the Montreal International Jazz Festival, from 25 June to 4 July 2027, with ticketed concerts in halls and a large programme of free outdoor shows around the Place des Festivals. The Montreal Fringe Festival of independent theatre is another early-summer date; check its site for the 2027 programme.

July 2027

Thursday 1 July is Canada Day and also Moving Day, when a large share of Quebec’s leases turn over at once. Expect moving vans, furniture on the sidewalks and busy roads, and avoid booking a short-term apartment check-in that day if you can. The Jazz Festival continues to 4 July, and Montreal Comiccon runs at the Palais des congrès from 2 to 4 July 2027.

July is also comedy, film and fireworks month. Just for Laughs, the comedy festival, returned to July in 2026; check its site for the 2027 dates. Fantasia, the genre film festival, ran from 16 July to 2 August in 2026. L’International des Feux Loto-Québec, the international fireworks competition, sends displays up from La Ronde on summer evenings, and you can watch for free from the Jacques-Cartier Bridge area and the Old Port, or pay for a seat at La Ronde. Check La Ronde’s site for the 2027 schedule.

August 2027

The summer peaks at the turn of the month. Osheaga, the big music festival at Parc Jean-Drapeau, ran from 31 July to 2 August in 2026, and Fierté Montréal, the Pride festival, ran from 31 July to 9 August, centred on the Village along rue Sainte-Catherine Est and ending with the parade. Check each festival’s site for the 2027 dates; both draw huge crowds and push up hotel prices.

Later in the month, MUTEK, the festival of electronic music and digital art, held its 27th edition from 25 to 30 August 2026. Late summer is also the last stretch of patio season, the fireworks and Piknic Sundays.

September 2027

Labour Day is Monday 6 September 2027, and the city’s autumn arts season starts as students return. POP Montreal, the independent music and arts festival, ran from 23 to 27 September in 2026; check popmontreal.com for the 2027 dates. September is also a good month for running and cycling events; check the organisers’ sites for the city marathon and the Tour de l’Île bike ride.

Sports Events in Montreal

Montreal is a hockey city first, but there is live sport in every season. The sports and entertainment guide covers tickets, venues and how to get there.

  • Montreal Canadiens (NHL). The regular season runs from October to April at the Bell Centre. In 2026–27 the last home game is on Thursday 1 April and the season ends on Saturday 10 April in Ottawa. Weekend games and visits from Toronto and Boston are usually the hardest tickets to get.
  • Canadian Grand Prix (Formula 1). 21–23 May 2027 at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, Île Notre-Dame. Take the Yellow metro line to Jean-Drapeau.
  • CF Montréal (MLS). The soccer club plays at Stade Saputo beside the Olympic Park. Check the club’s site for the 2027 schedule.
  • Montreal Alouettes (CFL). Canadian football runs through the summer and autumn. Check the club’s site for the 2027 schedule. The 2026 Grey Cup is in Calgary on 15 November.

Public Holidays in Quebec, 2026–27

Statutory holidays matter for visitors because they change shop hours, transit schedules and how busy the city is. Most shops close on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, while museums and restaurants vary. Quebec’s labour standards board, the CNESST, publishes the official list.

Holiday Date What to expect
Christmas Day Friday 25 December 2026 Most shops closed; the Christmas market open 11:00–19:00
New Year’s Day Friday 1 January 2027 Most shops closed
Good Friday or Easter Monday 26 or 29 March 2027 Employers give one of the two; hours vary
Journée nationale des patriotes Monday 24 May 2027 Long weekend for locals
Fête nationale du Québec Thursday 24 June 2027 Parties and concerts; many shops closed
Canada Day (and Moving Day) Thursday 1 July 2027 Moving vans everywhere; many shops closed
Labour Day Monday 6 September 2027 Long weekend
Thanksgiving Monday 11 October 2027 Long weekend; autumn colour

Free Montreal Events and Low-Cost Nights

A lot of Montreal’s event calendar costs nothing. The big summer festivals put a large part of their programme on free outdoor stages, and winter has its own free spectacles.

Free Montreal Events Worth Planning Around

  • Jazz Festival and Francos outdoor stages in the Quartier des spectacles, June and early July.
  • Montréal en Lumière’s outdoor site, with its light installations, from 18 to 28 February 2027.
  • The Christmas market and the Christmas Village, both free to enter, from November to late December or early January.
  • Fireworks from the riverside during L’International des Feux in summer.
  • Fête nationale on 24 June, with free neighbourhood concerts and parties.
  • Pride week, with free outdoor events in the Village and the parade.
  • The Santa Claus Parade downtown in November; check the parade’s own channels for the date.

Events Where Booking Ahead Pays

Some Montreal events sell out or price up quickly: the Grand Prix weekend, Osheaga, Igloofest Saturdays, The Nutcracker’s weekend performances, the Canadiens on Saturday nights and the Boxing Day game, Gardens of Light’s final weekend and sugar shack weekends in March. Buy tickets from the organiser’s own site or its official ticket partner rather than a reseller.

How to Find What’s On in Montreal This Week

The calendar above covers the big dates. For the week of your trip, a few sources do the job:

  • The organisers’ own sites for confirmed dates, programmes and ticket links. Organisers sometimes leave last year’s page online until the new programme is out, so check the year on the page.
  • The Quartier des spectacles calendar for free outdoor events, light installations and concerts downtown.
  • Tourisme Montréal (mtl.org), the city’s official tourism site, for weekly event roundups.
  • Venue listings at Place des Arts, the Bell Centre, MTELUS and the Olympic Park for concerts and shows.
  • Parc Jean-Drapeau and La Ronde for events on the islands.

Language is worth checking. Many Montreal events are in French, especially theatre, the Francos, CINEMANIA and the book fair, while music, sport, light shows and most outdoor festivals need no French at all. Our guide to French language and culture in Montreal explains the basics.

Planning a Trip Around Montreal Events

Events change the city’s prices and crowds more than the weather does. A few rules of thumb help:

  • Book accommodation first for big weekends. The Grand Prix, the Jazz Festival, Osheaga and Pride fill hotels months ahead. Our where to stay guide explains which neighbourhoods suit which festival.
  • Or avoid them on purpose. If you want a quieter, cheaper trip, check the calendar for the weeks with nothing big on, such as mid-November, early January or April. The best time to visit guide compares the months.
  • Use the metro. The downtown festival sites sit on the Green line at Place-des-Arts and Saint-Laurent, and the islands are on the Yellow line at Jean-Drapeau. Our getting around guide covers fares and passes.
  • Mind Moving Day. On 1 July, moving trucks and furniture block streets in residential neighbourhoods, and short-term rentals may have tricky check-ins.
  • Dress for the season. Outdoor winter events mean standing still in the cold for hours; see what to wear in Montreal in winter.

Four Event Weekends, One for Each Season

If you want to build a short trip around Montreal events, these four weekends stack several things into two or three days. Each uses dates that organisers have already published.

Autumn: Film, Music and Christmas Lights (Friday 13 to Sunday 15 November 2026)

Arrive on Friday for the opening of the Grand Marché de Noël in the Quartier des spectacles; on weekdays before mid-December it opens at 15:00, so it is an evening stop. Saturday is for a museum in the morning and a CINEMANIA screening or a Coup de cœur francophone concert at night, both in their final weekend. On Sunday, walk Mount Royal while it is light, then return to the market, which opens at 11:00 on weekends. If the Canadiens are at home on the Saturday, as they are against Colorado on 14 November, a game replaces the concert.

Winter: Igloofest and the Old Port (late January 2027)

Igloofest runs from 14 January to 6 February 2027, so check the festival’s lineup page for show nights before you pick a weekend. Spend Saturday skating, either beside Beaver Lake on Mount Royal or at a downtown rink, warm up in the Underground City in the afternoon, and dress in your heaviest layers for Igloofest in the Old Port at night. Sunday morning is for a long brunch and a museum. Check Parc Jean-Drapeau’s site for winter activities that weekend, which would give you a daytime family option.

Late Winter: Montréal en Lumière (Thursday 18 to Sunday 28 February 2027)

The festival’s outdoor site in the Quartier des spectacles is free and best after dark, when the light installations come on. Book a dinner on one night through the festival’s restaurant programme, and plan the other night around Nuit blanche if its date fits your trip. Pack for real cold: late February nights in Montreal are well below freezing on average.

Summer: Jazz, Canada Day and Comiccon (Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 July 2027)

This long weekend layers three things. Canada Day and Moving Day on Thursday 1 July bring a holiday mood (and moving trucks) to the neighbourhoods. The Jazz Festival is in its final days, with free outdoor stages around the Place des Festivals every evening until 4 July. Comiccon runs at the Palais des congrès from 2 to 4 July, a short walk away. Book a hotel near the Quartier des spectacles early, because this is one of the busiest weekends of the year.

The Weekend to Avoid on a Budget: Grand Prix (21 to 23 May 2027)

If you are not coming for Formula 1, steer clear of the Grand Prix weekend. Hotels across the city fill up, prices rise, restaurants downtown are packed and the Yellow line to Jean-Drapeau is crowded. The following weekend is a much better choice, with the FTA theatre festival opening on 26 May and the first warm evenings on the terrasses.

Are Montreal events in French or English?

Both. Music festivals, sport, light shows and most outdoor events need no French at all. The Old Port held a free outdoor countdown, Le Grand Minuit, on 31 December 2025, and bars, clubs and hotels run their own parties. The downtown Christmas market is also open over the holidays. Check the Old Port’s site for the 2026 programme, and see our New Year’s Eve guide for metro hours and party options.

Is there anything on in Montreal in April?

April is the quietest month for big events, but not empty. Blue Metropolis, the international literary festival, runs from 15 to 18 April 2027, the Canadiens finish their regular season (last home game on 1 April), and the sugar shack season runs into early April. It is a good month for cheaper hotels and museums without crowds.

Every guide is checked against primary sources — operators, transit agencies and official listings — and updated as things change.
